MCC control cabinets in potentially explosive atmospheres are subject to strict safety requirements to ensure safe operation. They must be certified in accordance with ATEX directives, which place special requirements on the suitability of the materials used and the design of the control cabinet. This includes the use of explosion-proof enclosures and the use of flameproof enclosures to prevent sparks or hot surfaces from triggering an explosion.

They must also have special ventilation and cooling systems to prevent overheating. The insulation of electrical circuits and the use of safe shutdown systems are also crucial. Regular inspections and maintenance by certified specialists are also part of the safety requirements to ensure long-term safe operation.

This applies in particular to areas of the chemical industry, oil refineries or other systems with a high risk of explosion.

The thermal calculation of an MCC control cabinet is a crucial process for preventing overheating and the associated failures. It begins with determining the heat losses of all devices installed in the enclosure, such as circuit breakers, motor starters and frequency converters. These heat losses are specified in watts and serve as the basis for calculating the required cooling system.

The volume of the enclosure and the surface area are then taken into account, as these influence the heat dissipation to the environment. The maximum ambient temperature and air circulation within the enclosure also play an important role.

In many cases, active cooling using fans or air conditioning systems is installed to keep the temperature constant. Alternatively, passive cooling systems, such as special ventilation slots or heat exchangers, can also be used if the power loss is lower. Incorrect thermal calculation can lead to premature component wear and reduced system performance.

MCC control cabinets must be wired in accordance with specific standards and regulations in order to ensure both operational safety and ease of maintenance. These primarily include the IEC 61439 standards for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, which place requirements on electrical insulation, protection against electric shock and the consideration of short-circuit resistance.

In addition, the cable cross-sections must be dimensioned according to the loads of the connected motors and devices in order to prevent overheating. Color coding of the cables is also mandatory in order to clearly assign the individual circuits and their functions. Cables for control signals and power cables should be laid separately to minimize interference.

The minimum distance between live parts and the presence of short-circuit and overload protection devices such as fuses or circuit breakers are also mandatory.
